Why Trust Is the Hardest Part of Coaching

Every practitioner knows that client progress depends on trust.
But earning that trust often takes time,  sometimes weeks or even months.

In those early sessions, clients still doubt. They wonder if your plan will work, if their pain will ever ease, if they can really get stronger again. They want to believe, but belief requires proof.

The good news is that neuroscience gives us a way to build that proof almost instantly.

Why Clients Need to Feel Results, Not Just Hear About Them

When someone comes to you in pain or frustration, their nervous system is already on alert. They’re not just listening with their ears. They’re scanning for safety signals, such as your tone, your confidence, the way their body feels during the session.

Words and promises don’t calm the brain.

Experience does.

When a client feels a change in their body within seconds, trust accelerates. They don’t have to take your word for it. Their brain confirms it.

That’s what the Assess–Reassess process does. It turns invisible progress into something they can feel.

The Science Behind the Reframe

The Assess–Reassess process is built on how the brain manages safety. The nervous system constantly compares incoming sensory data to stored predictions. When input feels clear, consistent, and safe, the brain allows more freedom in movement, strength, and coordination.

But when input feels uncertain, maybe due to stress, visual mismatch, or previous injury, the brain tightens control.

It limits movement or creates pain to reduce perceived threat.

By assessing a movement, applying one precise input, and reassessing immediately, you give the brain a new experience of safety. The client feels lighter, more stable, more mobile.

The brain says, “This feels good. Let’s keep it.”

That moment — usually within seconds — is the reframe.
It shifts the conversation from “Is this working?” to “I can feel it working.”

A Simple Loop That Builds Instant Credibility

Here’s what it looks like in practice:

  1. Assess: Choose one movement or range test to create a baseline.

  2. Apply: Introduce a single drill or sensory input, like a visual exercise, a balance task, or a specific breathing cue.

  3. Reassess: Repeat the test and observe what changes.

If movement improves or pain decreases, the brain is giving positive feedback. If not, you simply test another input.

This process removes guesswork, replaces complexity with clarity, and shows your client that their nervous system is active, adaptable, and responsive.

It’s one of the fastest ways to demonstrate expertise without saying a word.

From Compliance to Collaboration

Once clients experience this shift, they stop being passive participants. They become engaged co-pilots in the process. They learn that their body isn’t broken — it’s responding to safety cues.

That changes everything.

They show up curious, not cautious.

They start asking questions, paying attention, and trusting their own feedback.

Compliance transforms into collaboration, and your relationship deepens.

The work becomes personal and purpose-driven instead of mechanical and transactional.

The Emotional Win: Relief and Buy-In

When clients feel better within seconds, it’s more than a physical result. It’s emotional relief.

They no longer feel trapped inside their pain or performance plateau. They feel understood. That creates trust on a deeper level — not just in you, but in their own capacity to change.

That moment of relief is the foundation of long-term success.

Learn to Create That 3-Second Shift

The Assess–Reassess process is more than a tool. It’s a new way to communicate with the nervous system.  One that builds trust, confidence, and progress in real time.
